February 2025 Meeting
Our guest speaker was Alex Warcola of Marcela Honey Farms. He is a pollination contractor and had so much knowledge to share! He and his wife run a 10,000 hive pollination service, providing bees from California (almonds) to Maine (blueberries) and all points in between. His home base is here in the Burgaw/ Currie area in the fall and winter months and in NY (apples) in the spring and summer months.
‘Pollination is a by-product of foraging” so it is important to be aware of the number of bees per acre as well as weather conditions which affect the bees ability to forage.
His key takeaway was timing: from when to move his hives to when to treat those hives. He suggested treating for mites 2 generations before those over wintering bees are created, here in late August-early September.
He has several 10 frame components for sale and he graciously shared his cell phone number for anyone interested: (973-222-0464)
Thank you Alex for a fantastic discussion!
